Sampling technology
BMI has developed numerous sampling technology products to assist scientists with their aerosol research, air monitoring specialists with routing air monitoring and industrial hygienists with their occupational health and safety monitoring needs. Products include: inlets, impactors, flow splitters, a charge neutralizer and an atomizer aerosol generation system.
counterflow virtual impactor (CVI) inlet
Our CVI inlet system samples cloud droplets from research aircraft and can also be used for ground-based cloud sampling. Features include:
• Fully automated operation
• Variable cloud droplet cut size between 5 and 30 microns
• Pressure and temperature measurements of sample flow
• De-icing heater prevent ice build-up during operation
isokinetic inlet
The Isokinetic inlet system samples ambient aerosol from research aircraft and can be used for ground-based sampling from mobile platforms. The system features:
• Aerodynamic, twin-diffuser to minimize turbulence
• Automatic sample flow control to maintain isokinetic flow
• Wind-tunnel tested and validated
impactors
BMI offers both round jet and counterflow virtual impactors (CVI) for different particle diameter cut sizes and flow rates. Features include:
• CVI offers adjustable cut-size and low counterflow flow rate
• Round jet impactor (shown left) offers a variety of particle cut sizes
• Offered with or without differential pressure sensors.
flow splitters
We fabricate stainless steel flow splitters with diameters between 1/4" and 3/4" for precise splitting of air flows. Features include:
• Precise machining of tubing end angles for excellent fit
• Mating tubes can be cut to a variety of user-desired lengths
• Wide selection of tubing diameters and lengths
neutralizer
BMI manufactures an Aerosol Neutralizer Body with mounting brackets for two commercially available, easy to handle Polonium-210 ionizing strips. Features include:
• Compact design with stainless steel tubing
• Easy disassembly to install new sources (every 3 years) and
clean surfaces
• Readily available and inexpensive Po-210 sources with minimal regulatory requirements
aerosol generation system
Our atomizer-based Aerosol Generation System produces particles of known chemical composition and diameter size range. Features include:
• Gravity-driven liquid flow with flow rate control
• Atomizer chamber to prevent clogging
• In-line dryer to remove particle-bound water
• Dilution chamber for diluting high concentration atomizer output
